Google Business Profile optimisation checklist

By Cynosure Studios · 6 min read

Your Google Business Profile is often the very first thing a nearby customer sees — before your website, before your social media. Getting it right is the cheapest, fastest way to win more local enquiries.

For a local business, the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the local results does a huge amount of heavy lifting. It shows your hours, your reviews, your photos and a direct button to call you. A complete, well-tended profile routinely beats a half-finished one, even when the half-finished business is bigger. Here is the checklist we work through for every client.

Claim and verify the profile

Nothing else matters until the profile is verified and you control it. Search for your business name on Google, claim the listing if it already exists, and complete verification by post, phone or video as Google prompts. An unverified profile cannot be fully edited and will not rank well.

Complete every single field

Google rewards completeness. Empty fields are missed opportunities, so fill in everything:

Keep your NAP consistent

Your Name, Address and Phone number must match across your website, your profile and every directory you appear in. Inconsistent details confuse Google and erode trust in your listing. This is also why local citations matter so much, a topic we cover in our guide on showing up on Google Maps.

Add real photos regularly

Listings with photos get far more clicks and direction requests. Upload genuine images of your premises, your team, your work and your products. Refresh them every month or two. Avoid stock photos, customers can tell, and they want to see the real you before they visit or call.

Earn and answer reviews

Reviews are one of the strongest ranking and conversion factors you have. Ask happy customers at the right moment, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to every review, positive or negative, in a calm and helpful tone. A steady trickle of fresh reviews beats a burst followed by silence.

Post updates and use the Q&A

Use Google Posts to share offers, news and events at least weekly. Seed your own Questions and Answers section with the things people genuinely ask, then answer them clearly. This keeps the profile active and gives customers the information they need to choose you. A profile that is updated often simply looks more alive and more trustworthy than one frozen in time.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is completely free. It is one of the highest-return marketing assets a local business has, and it costs nothing but the time to set it up properly.

How long does it take to rank in the Map Pack?

It varies by how competitive your area and category are. With a complete profile, steady reviews and consistent local citations, many businesses see movement within a few weeks to a couple of months.

How often should I post on my Google Business Profile?

Aim for at least one update or post a week. Regular activity signals to Google that the business is active, and it keeps your listing looking fresh and trustworthy to potential customers.
