Local SEO: how to show up on Google Maps for your business
When someone nearby searches for what you sell, do you show up? For most local businesses, the Google Map Pack is where the customers are — and here is how to get into it.
"Local SEO" simply means optimising your online presence so you appear when people search for businesses near them: "plumber near me", "best cafe in Noida", "roof repair Austin". Google decides who shows up in the map results based on relevance, distance and prominence. You can influence all three.
1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile
This is the single biggest lever. Claim your Google Business Profile, then fill in every field: categories, services, hours, service areas, description and at least ten real photos. A complete profile dramatically outperforms a half-finished one.
2. Get your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. Google cross-checks these across the web. If your phone number is different on Yelp than on your website, it erodes trust and ranking. Make them identical everywhere — your site, directories and social profiles.
3. Collect reviews (the right way)
Reviews are a major ranking and trust signal. Ask every happy customer for a Google review and respond to all of them, positive or negative. Never buy reviews or gate them — it violates Google's policies and can get you penalised.
4. Build local citations
Citations are mentions of your business on other sites — local directories, industry listings and your local chamber of commerce. Consistent citations build the "prominence" Google looks for. Quality and consistency beat quantity.
5. Make your website local-SEO ready
Your website backs up your profile. It should load fast, be mobile-first, include your city and services in the content, and use local business schema so search engines understand exactly who and where you are. This is built into every site we ship — see our SEO service.
